ALE ESTUDIO's Espacio Aguacate: A Single Furniture Volume Blurs Office and Home in Madrid

In Madrid's Carabanchel district, ALE ESTUDIO has transformed a fourth-floor apartment into a hybrid workspace and home, using a central joinery volume instead of walls to delineate functions. The project, named Espacio Aguacate, was initially commissioned as a workspace for a young professional but evolved to accommodate daily living. The central volume, made of natural-finish MDF, houses private functions like the bathroom and marks a soft threshold to the work area, allowing the rest of the space to flow continuously. The apartment's trapezoidal floor plan, large windows, and abundant natural light contribute to a shifting spatial experience. Material restraint is key: a single run of green rubber flooring by Artigo unifies the space, while MDF joinery and ceramic tiles in varying formats maintain a consistent vocabulary. Stainless steel details, including a Sira washbasin and TRES taps, add technical notes. The design responds to Carabanchel's transformation from a working-class district to a vibrant neighborhood with artists' studios and cultural spaces. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.
