Albert Marquet: A Lifelong Obsession with Water

Born in Bordeaux in 1875, Albert Marquet was a pivotal figure in both post-impressionism and fauvism, with a particular emphasis on water-related subjects. At the age of twenty, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Gustave Moreau and challenged artistic conventions in pieces like 'Fauve.' By the 1910s, his nudes, often depicting his partner Yvonne, took on a more sensual tone. His portraits, including 'Sergent Colonial,' highlighted his skill with black tones. Marquet's depictions of Parisian street life, such as those for 'Bubu de Montparnasse,' captured everyday scenes. He painted alongside Matisse, drawing inspiration from Cézanne, and transformed Normandy's ports into vibrant landscapes. His work on Parisian quays continued until his passing in 1947, with water being a recurring theme, culminating in 'Contraventana Verde.'
