Ai Weiwei to Create 2026 Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission at MCA Australia

Ai Weiwei, the renowned Chinese dissident artist, has been chosen for the second Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, set to debut in September 2026. This series, initiated by the Balnaves Foundation in 2025, pays tribute to philanthropist Neil Balnaves, who contributed over AUD 20 million to Australian charities. Running until 2028, the program features a new artist each year, with British sculptor Thomas J Price kicking off the series with Ancient Feelings (2025). Ai, celebrated for his socially engaged art, co-created the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics and has displayed works at Tate Modern and the Venice Biennale. MCA Australia’s director, Suzanne Cotter, lauded Ai’s influential voice, while he expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming commission. The specifics of the sculpture remain under wraps.
