AGSA to Stage Australia's First Kamigata Woodblock Print Exhibition in 2027

exhibition · 2026-09-17

Launching on 30 January 2027 at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Floating Worlds: Prints from Osaka & Kyoto marks the inaugural exhibition in Australia focused on the woodblock print tradition of Japan's historical Kamigata region. Originating in Osaka and Kyoto during the Edo period (1603-1868), these prints feature over ninety artists, many of whom are seldom showcased in Australia. The exhibition includes depictions of Kabuki actors, renowned beauties, the supernatural, sumo wrestlers, and expansive landscapes. Accompanying the prints are striking examples of samurai armor and exquisitely made kimonos. Together, these artifacts highlight the 'floating worlds' of theatre, beauty, fashion, and entertainment that thrived in Osaka and Kyoto's dynamic urban settings.
