African Futures Institute Opens Permanent Headquarters in Renovated Accra Warehouse

architecture-design · 2026-09-29

The African Futures Institute, initiated by Ghanaian-Scottish architect Lesley Lokko, has established its permanent headquarters in a former tile warehouse located in Accra, Ghana. The renovation, carried out by Lokko alongside Fred Swart, Patrick Gentilezza, Patti Anahory, and Laurence Lord, creates spaces for research, education, and culture. This facility, which opened in 2021, represents the institute's first lasting location. The refurbishment maintains the building's original late 1950s or early 1960s façade while introducing skylights and new wall openings. At its core is the Urban Room, designed for diverse activities. The Nomadic African Studio program is set to begin here in 2025. In 2024, Lokko received the RIBA Gold Medal and was recognized as one of Time's 100 most influential people.
