Adrien Fregosi's Posthumous Retrospective at Miam Sète

The Miam – Musée international des arts modestes in Sète presents 'Adrien Fregosi. Les Moyens du bord', the first major retrospective of the late French artist who died prematurely. The exhibition, on view until March 7, 2026, brings together Fregosi's multidisciplinary work—painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography—alongside pieces by 20 other artists including Philip Guston, Robert Crumb, Mike Kelley, Roland Topor, Bruno Peinado, Eva Nielsen, Marion Balzac, Julie Bena, and Safia Bahmed-Schwartz. Curated by Hervé Di Rosa (founder of Miam) and a co-curator, the show is organized in thematic chapters across two levels, highlighting Fregosi's diverse influences from graffiti, fanzines, comics, and animation. Fregosi, who began as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym Puzl at age 20, spent his last decade in Sète. The exhibition includes a mural by Olivier Millagou covered in stickers of Fregosi's drawings, and a room titled 'Paysages à l'intérieur' featuring works by Crumb and Raymond Pettibon. Another section, 'Au-dessus des étoiles', addresses political engagement, referencing Philip Guston's critique of the Ku Klux Klan. Fregosi's own works, made with ballpoint pen, spray paint, and even papier-mâché from chemotherapy boxes, are noted for their emotional range—from joyful to violent. The show concludes with an installation by Safia Bahmed-Schwartz on disappearance.
