Adrian Danchig-Waring Bows Out of New York City Ballet With Balanchine, Pam Tanowitz, and a Post-Show Rave

other · 2026-10-14

Adrian Danchig-Waring, a New York City Ballet principal since joining the company in 2003, gave his farewell performance on a Sunday matinee at Lincoln Center, then hosted a tropical-themed rave at Performance Space in the East Village. The California native entered the School of American Ballet dorms in 2001 and became a noted interpreter of George Balanchine's canon; he also serves as artistic director of the New York Choreographic Institute. His program paired Balanchine's The Four Temperaments (1946) and Agon (1957) with Lar Lubovitch's Each in Their Own Time and a new Pam Tanowitz quartet, Once With You, made for him with Unity Phelan, Mira Nadon, and Indiana Woodward. He danced Phlegmatic in Four Ts and a pas de deux with Phelan in Agon; Dominika Afanasenkov and David Gabriel debuted in the latter. Costumes for the Tanowitz work came from Reid & Harriet, whose tank unitard for Danchig-Waring bore two electric-blue profiles—his and Tanowitz's. The after-party, co-hosted with his husband, art adviser Thomas Rom, who chairs Performance Space's board, drew guests including Julie Mehretu, Yvonne Force Villareal, Jeremy O. Harris, Alok Vaid-Menon, and Taylor Stanley. DJ Illich performed behind fronds, Studio GUMGUM contributed a light installation, and pizza boxes read "Final Bow Full Belly." Danchig-Waring described the transition as a "rewiring" rather than retirement, with New York Choreographic Institute projects to be announced.
