Adam Elsheimer: The First Moonlit Night in European Painting

Adam Elsheimer, a German painter born in Frankfurt am Main in 1578, is celebrated for his pioneering use of moonlight in European art. His painting 'The Flight into Egypt' (1609), housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, is considered the first European painting illuminated by the moon. Elsheimer, who trained in Frankfurt and later worked in Venice and Rome, was influenced by the Carracci, Caravaggio, and Venetian masters like Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto. He specialized in small copper paintings, which gained early success. His work, characterized by dramatic light contrasts and a nuanced palette, influenced later artists, notably Claude Lorrain. The painting depicts the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt at night, with the moon, stars, and Milky Way prominently featured, a departure from traditional daytime depictions. Elsheimer's interest in astronomy, possibly influenced by contemporaries like Kepler and Galileo, is evident in the naturalistic representation of the night sky. The painting also includes shepherds and animals, referencing the Gospel of Luke. Elsheimer's 'Ceres at the House of Hecuba' in the Museo del Prado, once owned by Rubens, further demonstrates his mastery of nocturnal light. His short life of 32 years belied his lasting impact on Baroque painting.
