Acaye Kerunen's 'Apoi' at Haus Lange, Krefeld

Acaye Kerunen's first solo museum exhibition in Germany, 'Apoi', is on view at Haus Lange, Kunstmuseen Krefeld, until 6 September 2026. The show brings together earlier works and new commissions in a site-responsive installation that engages Mies van der Rohe's modernist architecture. Kerunen works with organic materials like raffia and palm fibres, drawing on indigenous knowledge and women's labour in northern Uganda. She challenges Western hierarchies that marginalize craft, asserting material knowledge as contemporary artistic agency. The exhibition includes film, textile, and performance elements, inviting somatic engagement. Kerunen is the first female artist from Africa to have a museum retrospective at Krefeld. She collaborated with artisans and insisted on being seen as a contemporary artist, not a cultural ambassador. The installation at Haus Lange includes site-specific works like 'The Vunga' that challenge display methodologies.
