Abigail DeVille's 'Deo Vindice' Makes Southeastern Debut at ICA VCU

Right now, you can check out Abigail DeVille’s immersive installation 'Deo Vindice (Orion’s Cabinet)' at the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. It’s running until August 18, 2026. This large-scale piece features burned Colonial-style cabinets, which reflect the devastation Richmond faced in 1865 during the final days of the Civil War. Originally made for the 'MONUMENTS' exhibition in Los Angeles, it was positioned near taken-down Confederate statues. Curator Amber Esseiva points out that bringing this work to Richmond deepens discussions about power, erasure, and shared history. The cabinets' arrangement reflects Orion’s constellation, linking it to the Confederacy's legacy of white supremacy, while the scaffolding draped in tattered fabric represents a twisted historical narrative.
