AAmp Studio's Toronto Headquarters Transforms 1956 Medical Building into Multi-Use Architectural Marvel

Architect Anne-Marie Armstrong and creative director Todd Temporale have completed an ambitious adaptive reuse project at 584 Jones Avenue in Toronto's Greektown neighborhood. The 1956 building, originally home to Dr. George Coulter's medical practice and Coulter Drugs, has been transformed into a quadruple-function space through a pandemic-era renovation. The project added a two-story addition that bridges over the original structure, creating a combined residence, office space for AAmp Studio and Viva & Co., and two rental apartments below grade. Armstrong, co-founder of AAmp Studio, and Temporale, creative director at Viva & Co., purchased the building in 2017 and preserved its original yellow brick facade while adding blue and light grey brick elements. The design maintains neighborhood scale by setting back the uppermost floor to align with adjacent pitched roofs, creating a roof deck with hot tub. Structural engineers Moses Structural Engineers guided the innovative approach of drilling rebar from the roof down through the existing CMU block walls to minimize disruption. The interior features vintage furnishings including Jean Prouvé brise-soleil panels, Pierre Jeanneret chairs from Chandigarh, and a Carlo Scarpa-designed table, alongside custom millwork by Wood Studio. The project serves as a model for updating similar mid-century buildings while preserving community memory and architectural integrity.
