2Craigs Launches Second Visual Dialogue Project Using Call-and-Response Structure

Photographer Craig Cutler and illustrator Craig Frazier, known collectively as 2Craigs, have initiated their second collaborative venture titled Project 2. This year-long visual exchange, which commenced on January 27, 2026, employs a call-and-response framework where each artist sequentially reacts to the other's posted images without prior discussion or planning. The project follows their initial endeavor, Project 2 Craigs, which involved weekly image responses to 104 words over 52 weeks and resulted in a book featured in PRINT Magazine's Book Club. In the new project, Cutler started with an image of a spiraled wood shaving, and the artists alternate posting responses, aiming for swift and intuitive creation. The collaboration emphasizes transformation rather than repetition, with each image serving as both an answer and a new prompt. Cutler works in photography and constructed objects, while Frazier employs illustration and design, leading to unexpected connections across mediums. The artists describe the process as a visual dialogue that explores conceptual jumps and surprise connections, with the sequence expected to traverse abstraction, humor, and visual coincidence over the year. The project highlights the historical roots of call-and-response in West African musical traditions and its evolution in spirituals, gospel, blues, and jazz, applying this structure to visual art to examine how ideas travel between creative minds.
