1937 Delage D8-120 S Pebble Beach Best of Show Expected to Fetch Up to $6M at RM Sotheby's

A 1937 Delage D8-120 S Aerodynamic Coupe, which won Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2005, is expected to fetch between $5 million and $6 million at RM Sotheby's Monterey Auction from August 13 to 15 at the Monterey Conference Center in Northern California. The car is part of the 22-lot Sam and Emily Mann Collection, which also includes Clark Gable's 1935 Duesenberg JN Convertible. The New Jersey–based couple spent over four decades assembling rare prewar coachbuilt cars and have now decided to sell. The Delage was the prototype for the D8-120 S model, featuring a 4.75-liter straight-eight engine, lowered suspension, and custom aluminum-and-steel body designed by Georges Paulin and built by Marcel Pourtout. It was originally the daily driver of Louis Delâge, founder of the marque. After a fender-bender in 1953, it was modified by Saoutchik, but a later restoration by Stone Barn reversed those changes using original photographs and Pourtout archives. The restoration took over two and a half years. Harvey Stanley, director of private sales for RM Sotheby's, called it a "coachbuilt masterpiece" and said the Pebble Beach win adds "immeasurably" to its provenance. He predicts the buyer could be in their 40s, reflecting a changing market with renewed interest in prewar cars. The car also won Best of the Best at the inaugural Louis Vuitton Classic in New York City in 2005.
