1888 Proof Double Eagle Sells for $170,800 at Heritage Auction
At the Summer FUN U.S. Coins Signature Auction held by Heritage from July 16 to 18, an 1888 Double Eagle, rated PR64 Deep Cameo by PCGS, sold for an impressive $170,800. This contributed to a staggering total auction revenue of $12,400,954 and set a new record for that grade of 1888 coin. Another notable sale was the 1861-S Paquet Double Eagle from The Fudd Collection, which went for $128,100. The 1888 double eagle was minted during the Gilded Age, with a proof mintage of either 102 or 105, and only about 20 to 25 are thought to still exist. Its unique glassy orange-gold fields and frosted designs distinguish it from typical 1888 proofs.
