Thinking Italian Marks 25 Years: Christie's Italian Art Sale Moves from Rome to Paris

market-auction · 2026-04-27

In 2026, Christie's Thinking Italian will mark its 25th anniversary, having been established in 2000 to focus on 20th and 21st-century Italian art. Prior to the 20th/21st Century: Paris Evening Sale on 22 October during Art Basel Paris week, a preview took place at Palazzo Clerici in Milan and Hotel de Russie in Rome on 23-24 September. The collection features pieces from Germany, Japan, the U.S., the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Italy, including Giorgio de Chirico's Les tragédiens d'Eschyle (1925) and Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale, Mezzogiorno in Piazza S. Marco (1961). Renato Pennisi, an international expert, highlighted the importance of quality over chronological order. In 2023, Thinking Italian relocated from London to Paris, aligning with Avant-Garde(s) and Art Basel Paris.
