Tamara de Lempicka: Eccentricity, Art Deco Portraits and the Many Faces of Iconicity

artist · 2026-06-12

Tamara Rosalia Gurwik-Górska, known as Tamara de Lempicka, was born on 16 May 1898 in Warsaw. An artist of flamboyant style, her life was shrouded in mystery, marked by her father's early disappearance, two marriages, and numerous affairs, alongside battles with profound depression. From 1910 to 1914, she resided in Saint Petersburg before relocating to Paris during the Russian Revolution with her first husband, Tadeusz Lempicki, and their daughter, Kizette. Influenced by Art Deco, she debuted her first exhibition in 1922. Her notable works include Kizette sul balcone (1927) and Autoritratto in Bugatti verde (1932), which delve into themes of female empowerment and sexuality. After her second husband passed away, she settled in Houston, Texas, and later Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she passed away on 18 March 1980.
