Sergio Solmi: The Forgotten Literary Critic Who Shaped Italian Culture

publication · 2026-10-04

In 1917, at a café in Parma, Sergio Solmi (1899–1981) first crossed paths with Eugenio Montale while both were enrolled in the officer training program at the Scuola di Fanteria di Parma. Hailing from Rieti, Solmi was injured that same year and spent time in a hospital in Castelfranco Veneto. He later pursued a law degree and co-founded the magazine Primo tempo. After graduating, he married Dora Martinet and had two children. In 1926, he became part of Banca Commerciale Italiana and contributed to various cultural publications. He led La Cultura starting in 1933, opposing fascism, which resulted in its shutdown. Arrested in 1945, he managed to escape. Following WWII, he focused on writing, releasing works such as Meditazioni sullo Scorpione e altre prose (1972) and Poesie complete (1974).
