Scoobafish's Urban Pixel: Hokusai's Great Wave Recreated with a Thousand Road Signs in Sardinia

artist · 2026-09-24

Maurizio Sergiusti, the Italian land artist also known as Scoobafish, is working on a project called Urban Pixel, which repurposes discarded road signs into physical representations of pixels for landscape art. The initial phase, titled The Last Wave, is currently taking place in Sardinia, where Sergiusti is reimagining Hokusai's Great Wave using hundreds of salvaged traffic signs, preserving their original characteristics. In the first full-scale test, Concerto 0, he examined various elements of the signs. Chapter I focuses on assembling nearly a thousand signs on a beach in Sardinia to create a large wave, featuring a decayed apple as a narrative detail. The Last Wave is temporary, existing for just a few hours, with its essence documented through photography and aerial footage.
