Paris Art Week Opens Under Security Alert After Nationwide Protests and Looting

festival-fair · 2026-10-18

Despite the ongoing unrest in France, Art Basel Paris and its associated fairs will continue as planned, culminating on 17 October with violent confrontations involving students, gilets jaunes, and law enforcement. In Paris, various groups vandalized shops, leading Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire to characterize the streets as devastated. Deputy Mayor Lamia El Aaraje noted that the police were under-resourced to prevent the looting. An emergency unit for impacted businesses was announced by Grégoire, who also arranged a meeting with trade representatives for 19 October. Arson attacks targeted Limoges town hall, a tourist office in Lyon, and a school in Lille. President Macron denounced the violence and initiated discussions with stakeholders. Enhanced security will be implemented at venues, and disruptions to public transport are anticipated. The preview for Art Basel Paris is set for 21 October.
