cultural-heritage · 2026-10-16

On September 30, the Museo Civico Gaetano Filangieri in Naples unveiled "Preservare le Radici della Libertà – Preserving the Roots of Freedom," a three-year initiative. This project, backed by a $210,000 grant from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, focuses on the restoration, conservation, and digitization of 24 historical documents, including letters exchanged between Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin from 1781 to 1787. Activities will encompass restoration, preventive conservation, high-resolution digitization, training in collaboration with U.S. institutions, and a final exhibition. The resulting digital archive will be made available under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license. This endeavor aligns with the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence in 2026 and the museum's 140th anniversary in 2028.
