Michelangelus: Microsoft Releases Free Font Based on Michelangelo's Handwriting
Microsoft has introduced Michelangelus, a complimentary typeface inspired by Michelangelo's script, now accessible within the Office suite. This initiative, commissioned by the Fabbrica di San Pietro, sought to reinterpret the artist's visual principles into a modern typographic framework. The font was crafted by Studiogusto, an agency established in 2004 by Mimmo Berterame and Stefano Caliandro, which began its collaboration with the Vatican during Pope Francesco's tenure. The research process involved over 300 Renaissance manuscripts, including 342 letters from Casa Buonarroti. Michelangelus boasts more than 500 glyphs, featuring historical symbols, and comes in four variations: Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic. It is suitable for both print and digital applications and can be downloaded from the project's website, which also provides its historical background.
