Michelangelo Buonarroti: From the Garden of San Marco to the Sistine Ceiling
Born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese, Michelangelo Buonarroti passed away in Rome on 18 February 1564. His remarkable talents across various artistic disciplines were highlighted by Giorgio Vasari. Initially apprenticed to Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo later studied in the Garden of San Marco, where he produced the now-lost sleeping Cupid. A statue of Bacchus was commissioned from him by Cardinal Raffaele Riario. His renowned Pietà (1498–99) in St. Peter's Basilica led to a tomb commission from Pope Julius II, which he finalized in 1545. Additionally, he single-handedly painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508–1512), despite wanting assistance. Raphael paid tribute to him in the School of Athens by portraying him as Heraclitus.
