Mag Rodrigues Captures the Hidden, Unplanned Lisbon in New Photo Series

publication · 2026-10-20

Born in Lisbon in 1991, Portuguese photographer Mag Rodrigues turns her lens on the vernacular texture of her native city rather than its postcard landmarks. Her ongoing body of images of Lisbon assembles small urban compositions — a worn marble staircase, the entrances of older houses, residents going about daily life, flashes of color from a window or balcony — that viewers must actively seek out. Rodrigues works between documentary and authored photography, and the resulting aesthetic is accidental rather than constructed, found by an eye trained to look past tourist appeal and the extraordinary. She deliberately avoids monuments and postcard views, focusing instead on what everyday life produces quietly and almost unnoticed. The Lisbon project fits a consistent trajectory across her other series, including Subsolo, As Senhoras, Covidário and Mãos, all of which direct attention to what tends to remain at the margins of vision. In this work the margin becomes the city itself, observed with the patience of someone who knows a place's beauty often lies in its least declared details. The series was featured by Collater.al alongside related photography coverage.
