Lean Lui's Girl's Universe Expands with White Barracks, a Militarized Utopia

Lean Lui has created an imaginary world called Girl's Universe, populated by girls, uniforms, solitude, and desire, suspended between purity and unease. The third chapter, White Barracks, marks a shift from interior spaces of female adolescence to external structures of power, capitalism, and representation. On a fictional island, an army of girls in white uniforms trains and watches artillery fire in the distance. At the island's center stands a crystal monument inscribed with the phrase 'protect the purest heart with the most ruthless weapons,' a deliberate contradiction. To defend fragility, the girls adopt the aesthetics of what they oppose: discipline, army, uniforms, weapons, control. Lui describes White Barracks as a response to the commodification and sexualization of young women's minds and bodies by the market and the external gaze. Her protagonists are not merely bodies to be observed; they occupy space and choose to be present. The utopia does not deny the outside world but imagines how it could be different.
