La New York di John Sloan: Realismo Ashcan e Vita Urbana
Nato nel 1871 a Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, John Sloan si trasferì a Filadelfia durante l'infanzia, dove divenne un incisore autodidatta. Iniziò la sua carriera come artista commerciale per il Philadelphia Inquirer nel 1892 e per il Philadelphia Press nel 1895, co-fondando il Charcoal Club. Influenzato da Robert Henri, Sloan iniziò a dipingere scene di Filadelfia negli anni '90 dell'Ottocento. Nel 1904, lui e sua moglie Dolly si stabilirono a Greenwich Village, New York, dove entrarono a far parte della mostra 'The Eight' e della Ashcan School. Ebbe un ruolo in The Masses, organizzò la Exhibition of Independent Artists del 1910 e partecipò all'Armory Show del 1913. Tra le opere notevoli figurano 'Election Night' (1907) e 'McSorley’s Bar' (1912). Sloan, che aveva una profonda ammirazione per l'arte dei nativi americani, morì di cancro nel 1951.
