Italian Bookstores Generate €1.8 Billion Annually, Yet 83% of Municipalities Lack One

economy-finance · 2026-10-22

Italian bookstores generate €1.8 billion in annual revenue, employ roughly 12,200 people and operate across a network of 4,451 sales points, according to research by the Associazione Librai Italiani with Centro Studi Tagliacarne and Format Research, presented in Rome at the Stati Generali delle Librerie. Only 17% of Italian municipalities host at least one bookstore. In towns under 5,000 residents, a sales point exists in just 5% of the territory. The Mezzogiorno accounts for 30.8% of outlets, while medium and large cities keep drawing investment, chains and independents. Physical stores still generate 78% of total turnover, even as customers increasingly search, inform themselves and order online. Seven in ten readers regularly visit the same bookstore, casting the bookseller as cultural mediator. The average age of operators is 53, with growing numbers of women and young people in the sector's workforce. Some 80% of bookstores host presentations, meetings, workshops and local initiatives, functioning as small cultural centers that collaborate with schools and associations. The gap between the market's national value and its territorial distribution frames the challenge: tax credits, rent relief, public procurement, school agreements and hybrid bookstore-café-event formats could support new openings. On Carte Cultura policies, 63.7% of accredited bookstores report lower revenues than in the previous 18app season.
