Édouard Manet: The Rebel Painter Who Shaped Modern Art

artist · 2026-04-27

Édouard Manet, born in Paris on 23 January 1832, passed away in the same city on 30 April 1883. His artwork, Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, created in 1863 and currently housed at the Musée d'Orsay, sparked controversy for featuring a nude woman among clothed men. Although he never participated in Impressionist exhibitions, Manet sought acknowledgment from the State and championed artistic liberty. His 1863 piece Olympia drew inspiration from Titian's Venus of Urbino. Despite his separation from the Impressionist movement, his creations significantly impacted it. Manet wed Suzanne Leenhoff in 1863, had numerous affairs, and battled syphilis and rheumatic ailments. He died following an unsuccessful leg amputation and is interred at Passy Cemetery.
