Canaletto: The Venetian Vedute That Conquered the World

artist · 2026-10-16

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was born in Venice in October 1697. He learned perspective from his father, a painter and theatrical scenographer. Unlike many 18th-century vedutisti who relied on the camera ottica, Canaletto used the device but was dissatisfied with mere fidelity. He believed an artist's originality lay in improving reality by "correcting its defects." His paintings feature hypnotic retouches to reflections and perspective, widening the visual field. Venice, which Monet later called "too beautiful to paint," inspired Canaletto to fully express his art. He meticulously chose precise light conditions and contrasts for each time of day. Besides Canal Grande views, Piazza San Marco was a favorite subject. By the 18th century, he became one of the most established painters, with commissions from Liechtenstein royalty and British aristocracy. During the Grand Tour era, he also produced celebrative works. His 1730 masterpiece, Il Bucintoro al molo il giorno dell'Ascensione, depicts the sposalizio del mare, with the red Bucintoro drawing the eye. Regata sul Canal Grande, another celebrative work, is now in the British royal collections. Around 1740, Canaletto moved to England, where he painted calm English moorland landscapes. He returned to Venice in 1757, created evocative night paintings, and remained there until his death on 19 April 1768.
