Zhang Chaoying's Himalayan Photography Exhibition Opens in Florence

On March 26, 2026, the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence launched a solo exhibition titled 'Luci d’alta quota. Lettera di un amore di quarant’anni su pellicola' featuring photographer Zhang Chaoying. The display presents 60 works spanning four decades of the artist's systematic exploration of the Himalayan region, establishing a visual and cultural atlas of this area often referred to as Earth's 'Third Pole.' The exhibition is structured as a dialogue between humanity and landscape, time and memory, light and material, prompting reflections on deep time and the vulnerability of high-altitude ecosystems. Alongside Zhang Chaoying's core works, the show includes pieces by his daughter Zhang Yuxiao, offering a complementary generational perspective. Both artists are associated with Chinese National Geography, sharing a professional and personal journey reflected in their respective practices. A dedicated section features the series 'Primavera, Estate, Autunno, Inverno,' with images printed on Chinese silk, using natural cycles as a metaphor for life's continuity and bridging Eastern tradition with Western visual culture. An accompanying video details Zhang Chaoying's analog platinum-palladium printing process and his Himalayan research. Central to the exhibition is the monumental publication 'Himalaya' from Chinese National Geography, an encyclopedic volume weighing over ten kilograms containing more than 3,000 images and 85,000 words of scientific analysis. The exhibition, open until May 15, 2026, was organized with support from Manifattura Tabacchi and Aria Art Gallery, coordinated by Massimo Listri and curated by Guoyin Jiang. It aims to create a cultural connection between the Alps and the Himalayas, and between Europe and Asia, blending documentary rigor with poetic sensibility.
