Zaha Hadid's VOLU Dining Pavilion to Be Auctioned in Monaco

A VOLU Dining Pavilion designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid will be offered at auction on April 8 by Hermitage Fine Art in Monaco. The pavilion is part of a design and jewelry sale, with an estimated price range of €900,000 to €1.1 million. Hadid collaborated with German architect Patrick Schumacher on this clamshell-shaped structure, which was originally commissioned for the Revolution Project at the Design Miami fair in 2015. The project aimed to showcase prefabricated structures by involving 30 artists and architects for Revolution Precrafted Properties, a Manila-based company. This particular edition was produced by Revolution Precrafted and later commissioned by the nonprofit amfAR for its 2016 Cannes benefit auction, where it reportedly sold for €1.3 million. The pavilion features a steel base with wooden inlays made from sustainably sourced American oak, covering 215 square feet, and includes three benches and a matching table. It is distinguished by its tropical color scheme, requested by amfAR, contrasting with the earlier metallic version. According to auction assistant Louise Bonin, there is no public record confirming the total number of pavilions produced, though rumors suggested a limited edition of 24. The current owner, who acquired it a decade ago, is consigning it anonymously. This sale highlights Hadid's work beyond her major buildings, emphasizing her contributions to smaller-scale architectural designs.
