Yue Fei Zheng's Astral Ascent Installation Uses 700 Star-Shaped Timber Modules

Designer Yue Fei Zheng created Astral Ascent, a site-specific installation composed of over 700 star-shaped modules made from sustainable timber panels. The structure employs an adapted mortise-tenon joinery system, allowing components to interlock without mechanical fasteners, forming a self-supporting assembly. Arranged in layers, the modules transition from dense at the base to porous at the top, creating a visual shift between solid mass and open framework. Light passing through voids projects shadows that change throughout the day, enhancing spatial perception. The work reinterprets traditional timber construction principles within a contemporary modular approach.
