Yngve Holen's 'Alien' Lamp: A Domestic Meteorite

GRAU has released its first Artist Edition, 'Alien,' created by Yngve Holen. The work is a lamp that transforms a moldavite—a tektite formed 15 million years ago from a meteorite impact—into a luminous object through digital scanning. Holen, known for treating objects as organisms and exploring systems of technology, industry, consumption, desire, and the body, here produces a mutant entity that brings cosmic and geological time into the domestic space. The lamp is designed not merely to illuminate but to introduce a vibration, making the familiar disturbing. The limited edition of 200 pieces accentuates its ritualistic nature, each example retaining the aura of the original meteorite. Creative Directors Timon & Melchior Grau position the piece as a cultural language and a field of experimentation where light becomes visible thought. The work blurs boundaries between artifact and gadget, sculpture and domestic presence, prehistory and digital hyper-present.
