Yin Xiuzhen's UK Survey Exhibition Explores Memory Through Textile Art

Yin Xiuzhen's first major UK exhibition, 'Heart to Heart,' is on view at the Hayward Gallery in London until May 3. The survey spans over three decades of her practice, focusing on works made from everyday materials like used clothing to address themes of memory, urbanization, and displacement. The exhibition includes early pieces from 1990s Beijing, where she responded to rapid modernization by preserving personal artifacts, as well as later large-scale installations such as 'Portable Cities' and a walk-in heart structure built from donated garments. The show examines how her art has evolved from grounded responses to specific urban change to more internationally oriented installations, maintaining a focus on human connection and the traces of lived experience.
