Yayoi Kusama's Infinite Obsession at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is presenting a major retrospective of Yayoi Kusama, spanning seven decades of her career, from her early years in Matsumoto to her time in New York and Tokyo. The exhibition, which runs from September 11, 2026, to January 17, 2027, is the third stop of a tour that began in Basel and Cologne. It includes historical pieces never before shown in Europe, as well as a new Infinity Mirror Room created specifically for this tour. The show highlights Kusama's early drawings of seeds and flowers, revealing the more secretive and troubling aspects of her work, beyond the immersive installations that brought her late fame. Born in 1929, Kusama has worked across painting, sculpture, collage, fashion, happenings, performance, and literature, all driven by a desire to dissolve the boundary between body and world. The exhibition emphasizes that her polka dots are not merely decorative but a means of self-obliteration into infinity.
