Yasmine Chami: A Writer Between Morocco and France

The latest episode of the series 'Une terre, une auteure' features an in-depth interview with Moroccan writer Yasmine Chami in her hometown of Casablanca. Born in 1966 in Casablanca, Chami studied at Lycée Louis le Grand in Paris and later at École Normale Supérieure Ulm in philosophy, earning an agrégation in social sciences. She then turned to anthropology, researching migrant women's lineages and the impact of migration on representations of motherhood and filiation. Her first novel, 'Cérémonie', was published in 1999 by Actes Sud. After the birth of her sons in 2001 in New York, she returned to Morocco, where she directed the Villa des Arts de Casablanca and later founded and ran an audiovisual production company for ten years. Through social programs broadcast on Moroccan television, she addressed issues of patriarchy, education, women's roles, money, sexuality, and religious transmission, questioning the gap between norms and realities. Since 2011, she has focused on teaching. Her fifth novel, 'Casablanca Circus', was recently published in paperback by Actes Sud. The interview offers an intimate portrait of a woman navigating between Morocco and France, reflecting on her inspirations and literary work.
