Xiaomi Unveils Xring O3 3nm AI Chip for Smartphones Amid Profit Slump

Xiaomi has introduced its flagship Xring O3 3-nanometre AI processor for smartphones, set to launch in September with the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Additionally, the company revealed the Xring O100, a 6nm AI accelerator aimed at enhancing its MiMo large language model when used alongside the O3, and the 3nm Xring D100 chip intended for autonomous driving applications. Both the O100 and D100 are expected to be commercially available next year. This initiative highlights Xiaomi's dedication to developing its own silicon, even amid a decline in earnings and rising component prices. Analysts suggest that this chip expansion elevates Xiaomi among China's leading self-developed mobile systems-on-a-chip (SoC) manufacturers. Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, emphasized the increasing importance of on-chip AI performance as workloads become more intricate, noting that while semiconductor investments may not yield immediate profits, Xiaomi's long-term strategy appears promising. This announcement arrives as the global smartphone sector grapples with escalating memory and component expenses, impacting profit margins for both handsets and electric vehicles.
