Wu Bin's Ao Ting Court Installation at University of Milan Honors Chinese Shanshui Tradition

Designer Wu Bin has created an installation titled 'Ao Ting Court' at the Cortile d'Onore within the University of Milan. The work draws inspiration from traditional Chinese design principles, specifically the concept of shanshui, which translates to mountain-and-water. This contemplative space measures six meters by six meters and features volumes arranged at varying heights and distances to encourage a slow, progressive walking experience. A bronze-colored element marks the beginning of an ascent, while a central illuminated area serves as a spiritual focal point. The installation incorporates materials from several collaborators: Yardcom surfaces form the main volumes and base, textured panels by M77 reference brushstrokes from landscape paintings, Umgg provides Pierre Bleue Du Hainaut flooring with an axe-cut finish, and Moorgen integrates intelligent lighting that changes over time. The project aims to reflect an Eastern perspective on harmony and connection with the natural world, creating an outdoor environment for living and contemplation.
