Writers Guild Staff Union Loses Healthcare Benefits During Ongoing Labor Strike

Members of the Writers Guild Staff Union have lost their healthcare coverage after seven weeks of striking. The union, representing over 100 employees in legal, communications, and residuals departments at the Writers Guild of America West, typically receives health benefits through the Producer-Writers Guild of America Health Plan. Eligibility requires working 31 hours weekly in the previous month, but striking workers are no longer qualified as of April 1. The union announced the termination via social media, stating it discovered the change through an online portal shortly before implementation. They described the move as exacerbating crises for families and employees, accusing the WGAW of attempting to undermine their union and strike. WGA West confirmed that monthly healthcare eligibility ceased for those not working in March, though striking staff can opt for COBRA continuation coverage. The guild explained it cannot contribute to benefits for employees without March earnings. The labor action began on February 17 after the staff union claimed management showed no intent to reach a contract agreement. Negotiations started last September. Concurrently, the WGA is engaged in contract discussions with major Hollywood studios, with their current agreement expiring May 1. Key issues include healthcare improvements, increased streaming residuals, and artificial intelligence protections. This marks the first negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers since the 2023 strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA. Recently, the staff union submitted a comprehensive collective bargaining proposal aimed at resolving the strike, but management has not agreed. Disputed points involve seniority-based layoffs, promotions, and mid-contract strike rights. The WGA stated it has offered a contract with substantial economic gains and workplace protections, calling it among the best for union staff in Los Angeles. The strike has also led to the cancellation of the WGA's Los Angeles awards ceremony.
