Woonpioniers Designs Modular Dune House in Dutch Nature Reserve

Dutch architectural firm Woonpioniers has completed a residential structure on the Ouddorp dunes of Goeree-Overflakkee island in the Netherlands. The project, named Duinhuis (Dune House), was constructed using modular techniques to comply with strict environmental regulations in the Natura 2000 protected area. Founder Daniel Venneman led the team in fabricating three separate units off-site, including bathrooms, wardrobes, and built-in beds, to minimize on-site disturbance. The components were assembled in a single day on steel stilts that were vibrated into the ground to reduce environmental impact. The building is primarily constructed from wood, including thermally modified timber for facades and roofs, which will weather to a silvery gray. Solar panels were integrated into the roof, and the design incorporates large glass facades for views and cross-ventilation. The staggered placement of units follows the dune's topography, creating varied interior heights and a kaleidoscopic light effect. The central pentagon-shaped kitchen connects the modules and features sliding glass doors to blur indoor-outdoor boundaries. The house includes two bedroom units and a living space, each positioned for optimal sunlight. Venneman emphasized the use of bio-based materials and a design that respects the fluid dune landscape without reshaping it.
