Woonpioniers Designs Light House with Modern Interior in Traditional Dutch Village

Dutch architecture studio Woonpioniers has completed Light House, a residential project in the village of Nigtevecht, Utrecht. The Amsterdam-based firm designed the home as two gabled structures that interlock, creating a facade that blends with the historic streetscape while concealing a contemporary timber-lined interior. Located on a narrow, sloping plot near a river, the building maximizes its constrained site through stepped floor levels and mezzanines that produce spacious, high-ceilinged rooms. The ground floor contains a kitchen, playroom, and living area arranged to flow into one another, with the living space elevated slightly for a sheltered atmosphere. An eastern section houses an office, utility room, and bathroom. Upstairs, bedrooms and bathrooms overlook the living area below, connected by a steel-and-timber bridge. Natural light enters through an angular skylight at the roof apex and additional openings in the sloping ceilings. Material finishes include pine planks in areas linked to the outdoors and pale gypsum plaster in more intimate spaces. Woonpioniers described the approach as a 'wolf in sheep's clothing' strategy, embedding modern design within a traditional exterior to respect the village context. The studio collaborated with clients to create a home that feels larger than its actual square footage, emphasizing fluidity and openness to the exterior. Previous projects by Woonpioniers include a bio-based material home in Olst and a prefabricated wooden cabin.
