Willowdale Sports Precinct Architecture Draws Inspiration from Indigenous Archaeological Sites

architecture-design · 2026-03-31

Sam Crawford Architects has designed the Willowdale Sports Precinct, a sports pavilion in Denham Court, Australia, scheduled for completion in 2025. The project is a collaboration between Stockland and Campbelltown City Council, with construction by RELD Group and Landscape Solutions. The design is inspired by nearby Indigenous archaeological sites, specifically ancient clay ovens used by the Dharawal and Darug peoples. Sam Crawford, director of the firm, noted that the precinct sits at the intersection of an ancient landscape, with evidence of human habitation for over 10,000 years, and a developing suburb in southwest Sydney. The pavilion references these archaeological finds, including ground ovens lined with baked clay balls that were historically manufactured, traded, and utilized for cooking. The project team includes Sam Crawford, Gabrielle Pelletier, Rhys Nicholas, Liam Marosy-Weide, Jarad Grice, Ken Warr, and Caitlin Condon, with landscape architecture by ASPECT Studios. Other consultants involved are Morris Golding Access Consulting for accessibility, GRS Building Reports for BCA, Lindsay Dynan for structural and civil engineering, Eco Logical Australia for ecology, Northrop Consulting Engineers for hydraulic, fire, and electrical systems, Lymesmith for integrated art, Hydroplan for irrigation, Hackett Certification as PCA, and MBM as quantity surveyor. The precinct is located south of Sydney's new international airport in a rapidly densifying area, highlighting the integration of cultural heritage with contemporary public architecture.
