William Kentridge and Philip Miller Present Immersive Performance at MAXXI Rome

South African artist William Kentridge and composer Philip Miller premiered their collaborative work 'Breathe Dissolve Return' at MAXXI in Rome in January 2026. The 55-minute immersive performance combines moving images with live music performed by an ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists. Curated by Oscar Pizzo and Franco Laera, the piece explores themes of memory, colonialism, and exploitation through non-linear narrative. The work is presented in Gallery 5, a space designed by Zaha Hadid, and includes accompanying artworks from the museum's collection. The project represents MAXXI's continued commitment to experimental performance programming.
