William H. Johnson's Fighters for Freedom reunited at Dayton Art Institute
From June 27 to September 13, 2026, the Dayton Art Institute will present 'Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice.' This exhibition, organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, marks the first reunion of Johnson's Fighters for Freedom series since 1946. Created during the mid-1940s, this series pays tribute to African American activists, scientists, educators, performers, and global leaders. Notably, it represents Johnson's last significant work.
