Willem Dafoe Subverts Photo Shoot Roles for AnOther Magazine

In the Spring/Summer 2003 issue of AnOther Magazine, actor Willem Dafoe upended the conventional photo shoot by assuming the roles of photographer, stylist, publicist, groomer, and model in a performance. Dafoe, known for his distinctive medieval features and portrayals of outcasts in films like Wild at Heart, A Shadow of a Vampire, and Auto Focus, has sustained a career playing soldiers, priests, and perverts. He is rarely recognized in New York and often mistaken for a European actor. Dafoe approaches acting physically, like a dancer, and has performed for 20 years with The Wooster Group, New York's experimental theatre company. He chooses movie roles with directors he respects, makes his home in New York, and is ambivalent about awards despite two Oscar nominations.
