Will Gamble Architects adds tropical courtyard extension to Grade-II listed English cottage

Will Gamble Architects has completed Muttram Veedu, a courtyard extension and refurbishment of a Grade-II listed English cottage in Northwood, UK. Named after the Tamil term for a courtyard house, the project was designed for clients with Sri Lankan and Indian heritage. A timber-framed glazed link connects the historic cottage to a new single-storey rear extension, which features bi-folding sapele timber doors, textured white paintwork recalling traditional mud plaster, and high-level clerestory windows. The extension is described as "explicitly tropical in appearance" by project architect Miles Kelsey. A courtyard garden designed with Tom Massey Studio incorporates tropical plants, wildflowers, and water features. Materials include mottled red brick, oak, sapele, copper, and lime finishes. The existing cottage received a refurbished kitchen, library, utility room, and new hallway. Will Gamble Architects was founded in London in 2018.
