Wildfires scorch France, Spain, Portugal as Europe faces another heatwave

On Sunday, hundreds of firefighters faced off against wildfires across France, Spain, and Portugal as temperatures surged in heatwave-affected Europe. These recent blazes have already scorched over 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) of land—an area twice the size of Manhattan—with some regions expecting temperatures to soar to 40°C. In June, authorities noted thousands of excess deaths during one of the continent's most severe heatwaves. France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez voiced worries about the wildfire season commencing a month earlier than usual. Near Spain's Costa Brava, a fire consumed over 2,200 hectares in just two days, complicating firefighting efforts due to rising temperatures and numerous "smoking hotspots." A statement from Catalunya's fire service indicated that they worked through the night to stabilize the La Bisbal d’Empordà forest fire. Regional president Salvador Illa announced the arrest of an individual linked to this fire, which has severely impacted the Gavarres protected area. Greece has also experienced similar blazes.
