A federal judge has issued an injunction that has put a stop to the expansion of the White House ballroom designed by Shalom Baranes, transforming the East Wing grounds into a significant construction zone. The Trump administration has responded by appealing this ruling, citing concerns related to national security in an emergency order. Greg Werkheiser, an attorney with Cultural Heritage Partners representing a group challenging the project, noted that bipartisan opposition and changing political dynamics make the ballroom's construction increasingly improbable. The National Trust for Historic Preservation initiated the lawsuit that resulted in the injunction, despite the National Capitol Planning Commission's approval of the East Wing Modernization Project. Currently, five potential outcomes are on the table: approval of existing plans, a smaller project scope, a drawn-out legal battle, a reversal during construction, or a full restoration of the original East Wing. Advocates for the East Wing Restoration Project are pushing for either a scaled-back version or a replica of the historic structure. Additionally, Representative Jamie Raskin has proposed legislation to list the White House under the National Historic Preservation Act. Meanwhile, the site continues to operate with only minimal maintenance and security measures, and no timeline for a resolution has been established.
