Watch Brands Increasingly Collaborate with Artists for Unique Timepieces

other · 2026-06-28

Watch brands are increasingly turning to artists for collaborations, seeking meaningful design rather than mere name-dropping. Alto, founded by former Audemars Piguet marketing manager Thibaut Guittard, is the first brand dedicated exclusively to artist collaborations. Its debut watch, the Art 01, features a micro-sculpture by French contemporary sculptor Bernar Venet, known for monumental Cor-Ten steel works. Only ten pieces will be made, with a bronze dial patinated in-house to avoid magnetic interference. The dial is just 0.8mm deep, balancing volume and weight. Guittard sees art as the second biggest collaborative communication after sport, aiming to bring watch fans into the art world. Alto plans a skeletonised watch in September. Other brands like Ressence are collaborating with Belgian artist Jules Wittock, whose intricate mazes on the Type 9 watch reveal a word in Super-luminova at midnight. Founder Benoit Mintiens notes that artist collaborations offer a philosophical dimension absent in commercial partnerships, though challenges arise when artists propose impractical ideas like translucent titanium. British brands Anordain and Paulin work with artists such as Rachel Duckhouse and John Nicol, who hand-paint dials. Founder Lewis Heath values the fresh perspectives artists bring, unconstrained by watch industry conventions. The trend underscores a shift toward artistic integrity in a crowded market.
