Washington's 'Freedom250' Fireworks Aim for World Record

Washington, D.C. is set to host the world's largest fireworks display on July 4, 2026, as part of the Trump administration's 'Freedom250' project. The 40-minute show, starting at 10:30 pm, will launch over 850,000 shells from 10 sites around the Lincoln Memorial and Potomac River, surpassing the current Guinness World Record of 810,000 shells set in Bocaue, Philippines in 2016. This is roughly 50 times larger than Washington's usual annual display. Pennsylvania-based Pyrotecnico has been hired to execute the event. The administration has billed it as an 'unforgettable' capstone for a day of performances, flyovers, and acrobatics at the National Mall, expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors. However, critics raise concerns about health hazards, environmental pollution, and animal distress. The cost of the affair has not been disclosed.
