Warhol and Banksy Exhibition in Naples Highlights Contrasting Artistic Approaches

An exhibition titled 'Warhol Vs Banksy. Passaggio a Napoli' is being presented at Villa Pignatelli in Naples, curated by Sabina de Gregori and Giuseppe Stagnitta, running until June 2. The show features over 100 works from private collections and galleries, creating a dialogue between American Pop artist Andy Warhol and British street artist Banksy. Both artists were influenced by Naples, with Warhol visiting in 1985 for a solo exhibition at Museo di Capodimonte where he presented his 'Vesuvius' series, returning to acrylic painting for the occasion. Banksy left two murals in Naples in 2006—'Madonna con la pistola' and 'Estasi di Santa Teresa'—which gained recognition after 2015. The exhibition explores their different approaches: Warhol's mechanical reproduction techniques and fascination with consumer culture versus Banksy's anonymous, socially critical interventions. It includes Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup cans and Marilyn Monroe portraits, alongside Banksy's adaptations like his Tesco soup can placed secretly at MoMA in 2005. The show also references Banksy's 2007 London exhibition 'Banksy vs Warhol' and his various public interventions in museums worldwide. Both artists engaged with themes of money, death, and flowers, with Warhol's 'Flowers' series contrasting Banksy's 'Love Is In The Air' mural in Bethlehem. The exhibition positions Naples as an active participant in this artistic conversation.
